Latest Pattern RAMBLER Hat Headband Cowl

free crochet patterns, how to crochet, hat, headband, cowl, neckwarmer

Spring is in the air

Spring is here and the sun is shining and temperatures are getting warmer, I am so excited!

A week ago on Sunday, we walked the Chilham Circular (approx 10 miles) starting and finishing at Chilham, Kent, UK.  It was a fabulous day with loads of sunshine, a fresh breeze blowing reminding us it is still only March, and the temperature rose from 11C in the morning to 17C in the afternoon.

We thoroughly enjoyed  walking the woodlands, Yew forests, the Kentish Downs, upland and downland fields, panoramic views, bluebell woods (not blooming yet) and passed through the Godmersham Park estate.  What a fabulous walk, we will definitely go back and do it again when all the leaves are on the trees.

It's all this lovely spring weather walking which is guiding my crochet projects at the moment.

Spring crochet

I have loads of crochet hats for winter walks and desperately need spring time hats, something to keep my head warm and keep the wind out of my ears, especially when the fresh breeze carries with it a "wind chill factor", and not a hat made with wool or alpaca, but a lighter weight cotton or bamboo yarn.

Ta-dah! the little Rambler hat headband cowl was created using a lovely 80% bamboo 20% wool yarn from Sirdar called "Smiley Stripes".  At first I wasn't too sure about the orange but when the lovely pattern started to emerge with each row, I was loving it.

I can wear it to keep my head warm, or open up the end and double it over for a headband and ear warmer, or slip it down and wear it around my neck, just lovely.  Rambler is similar in style to my first hat/headband/cowl which I made in autumn 2012 on our Scottish highlands trip (see this post) a totally different pattern, whereas this spring design is super easy and quick to make.

Here's my first SPRING design for 2014
RAMBLER Hat Headband Cowl

Merino Wool all the way!

pure merino wool, crochet patterns, mittens, scarf, headbands, cowl,

I love merino wool and my latest favourite has to be James C. Brett
Pure Merino DK (update: which now goes by the name JW Pure Merino, the JW stands for Jenny Watson).  Check out the website here.

Luxuriously delicate to the touch and incredibly soft yarn made from 100% Merino Wool and available in a range of colours (18 approx).

pure merino wool, crochet patterns, mittens, scarf, headbands, cowl,

I've used this JW pure merino wool to make baby hats and mittens, adult hats, headbands, neck warmers and mittens, and I love how super soft it feels, without the scratchy feeling usually associated with natural wool yarns. simply I love, love, love it!

AND I have yet to find any other yarn similar, so if any one out there knows of a beautifully super soft pure merino, please let me know I would love to compare them.

JW Pure Merino Crochet Projects
I decided to make a silly pair of mittens which I have called "LOOPY" because of the loops within the pattern and of course a matching headband/neckwarmer.

pure merino wool, crochet patterns, mittens, scarf, headbands, cowl,

I first designed the mittens in late 2011, all in one colour, as you can see in photo below.

pure merino wool, crochet patterns, mittens, scarf, headbands, cowl,

and then left the pattern sitting on the back burner because I just wasn't sure about them. Luckily last year I was playing around with my stash of odd balls of yarn and decided to make the mittens again but this time using two colours

pure merino wool, crochet patterns, mittens, scarf, headbands, cowl,
and what a surprise, they looked so much better with the two colour combination than with one, I much prefer the two colour combination and now I have ideas for all kinds of other stuff using this LOOPY design, just need to have the time to crochet them up.

TIME TO KNIT...

knit patterns, cowl, scarf, mobius, hat, beanie, how to knit,

A CHANGE IS AS GOOD AS A HOLIDAY

Every now and then, I need a break from crochet, it is in these moments I turn to my knitting and this time I wanted to knit something fast and super easy.

The best way to achieve this was with a CHUNKY YARN and an UNCOMPLICATED PATTERN. This is what I came up with, a knit hat with a chunky concertina style rib.

knit patterns, cowl, scarf, mobius, hat, beanie, how to knit,

I made this hat for my darling (naturally he always needs more hats) and because he is blessed with a bald head and has a sensitivity to natural yarns, I choose a 10% Wool 20% Alpaca 70% Acrylic yarn, which he can manage to wear without needing a cotton lining to protect his scalp.

NEEDLE SIZE

This yarn is super chunky and I did not use the needle size recommended on the yarn label, I dropped down a few sizes, quite a few actually. The label recommends a NEEDLE size of 10mm (US 15), however, I went ahead with a 6mm (US 10), which gave me a nice chunky warm hat (without big holes between stitches).

knit patterns, cowl, scarf, mobius, hat, beanie, how to knit,

YARN WEIGHT

The yarn is Wendy "Serenity" Super Chunky 100g, 80m (87yd) and they have a nice selection of thirteen (13) colours - from cream to black, pink to purple, and teal to blue, basically enough colours to satisfy everyone.

I liked the look and feel of my husband's knit hat so much, I made myself one as well in purple, my favourite colour. Check it out below.
knit patterns, cowl, scarf, mobius, hat, beanie, how to knit,

The best thing about this knit hat pattern it is knit flat on straight needles, you don't need to use double-pointed needles, or circular needles, simply knit each row and then whip stitch the seam. AND it takes no time at all to complete. So, so easy, you have to give it a try.

SCARF YARN

I loved knitting this chunky concertina rib, I decided to use it in a scarf (cowl) pattern as well. However, this time I turned to my favourite circular needles and knit in the round and wow what a great scarf. The yarn is James C. Brett "Passion" Chunky, 100g, 146m (160yd), 70% Acrylic 30% Wool, the colours are fantastic and create a beautiful striped effect. I used two balls (200g) to make a scarf long enough to go around the neck twice. See photo below.

knit patterns, cowl, scarf, mobius, hat, beanie, how to knit,

I loved the subtle colour change, combined with the chunky rib so much, I made three (3) scarves. LOL!  Each scarf is a different colour, and I think they will end up under the Christmas tree for some lucky people.

knit patterns, cowl, scarf, mobius, hat, beanie, how to knit,

And for everyone else, I have written up the pattern, yes it is a KNIT pattern, NOT crochet, and yes it is my first KNIT pattern made public.

I hope you enjoy knitting these as much as I did.

A Man Cowl

free knit patterns, cowl, scarf, infinity scarf

Knitting this EXTRA LONG cowl for my darling man, has been taking up most of my time. It is a very interesting and eye catching pattern, using simple purl and knit stitches placed in pattern sequence to create the stunning look.

What has been very taxing on my brain is the 18 pattern rows repeated continuously and each row different. No wonder it took me a while to finish, this was not a pattern where I could remember the 18 row sequence at all.

Anyway my man loves his cowl, he can wrap it around his neck twice. I joined the finishing edge with the starting edge, just a simple cowl ONE BIG LOOP.

I made the cowl with a gorgeous yarn from ROWAN called Cocoon made from a blend of merino wool 80% and kid mohair 20%, this luscious yarn helps to bring out the cable-like design just perfectly, and it is ever so, so, soft.

As much as I love the look and feel of this cowl and I would simply love to make one for myself, I really don't think I could bring myself to make it again very soon, having to keep track of every row simply was too much for my brain, I didn't find it a relaxing experience. However that is me, the pattern instructions are very clear and easy to follow, so if you are looking for a knitting pattern for a scarf with a wonderfully fantastic textured cable-like design then this is the perfect pattern.

MY PATTERN DETAILS

YARN:  Rowan Cocoon 100g - 115m (126yd)
YARDAGE: 3 x 100g - 345m (377yd)
Yarn colour:  Tundra 808
Measurements:  approx. Width 8in (20cm) x Length 56in (142cm)
Needles:  6mm

I knitted the cowl with a thicker yarn and larger needles than suggested in the Knit Pattern, and ended up with a wider scarf, but it's not an issue for the end result.

ROLLING MOBIUS - ROLLING COUNTRYSIDE

free crochet patterns, scarf, infinity scarf, cowl, man, moebius, mobius

Here's one for KENT

The landscape of East Kent, UK is wonderfully diverse, rich in its arable land, fruit growing, horticulture and wildlife - and it's this glorious rolling countryside which is my inspiration for this crochet mobius scarf - COUNTRY TRACKS.  Just a bit manly and robust with a softening in the roll factor.  Just like the countryside rough in parts and with a soft edge to it's beauty.

CREATING WITH PURPOSE

So, unlike my other mobius scarf patterns this time I've designed it to roll - yes, that's right ROLL.

I like the bobble stitch and thought I would take advantage of it's texture, and create a country themed scarf with an added little twist in the very last round to allow it to roll back over itself.

free crochet patterns, scarf, infinity scarf, cowl, man, moebius, mobius

Initially it looks like any other crochet mobius, seems to lie flat as you work each round, but then add the last round, and give it a stretch - hey presto! you have a roll factor with a mind of it's own.

Simply Creative Crochet

crochet patterns, how to crochet, mobius, scarf, cowl, infinity scarf, neckwarmer,

Ho Hum Week

I've been "under the weather" lately and my only saviour has been my ability to crochet through the thick and thin of it. So, please don't ask, I prefer not to talk about it, I'd rather focus on a healthy body and everything working 100%.

Basically, I concentrate totally on my crochet to avoid feeling the pain, and thank God for small wonders. How amazing is the brain/body relationship? take your mind off it and it doesn't exist! Well, at least for moments in infinity.

Crochet Showtime

Now to present my new creation... drum roll please... I am very pleased with myself and my new design...  "simply perfect" and "simply beautiful"

Mobius Neckwarmer "HONEYCOMBE"

crochet patterns, how to crochet, mobius, neckwarmer, cowl, infinity scarf,

Mobius Scarf Technique

This crochet mobius is made using Mirjam Bruck-Cohen's instructions for crocheting a mobius in a continuous circle, starting from the middle.  I love her concept and how easy it is, make one and there is no stopping you from making many more mobius scarfs, shawls, neckwarmers, cowls, headbands. Whatever takes your fancy - long, short, lacy, chunky, etc, etc, you get the picture.

So here is my short version with a "simply beautiful" honeycombe texture, (my own design, of course). I first crocheted the honeycombe texture stitch with a delicious little keyhole scarf I made last winter, it is great for extra warmth, because the honeycombe structure traps air and keeps you warm and it is gives the crocheted fabric extra stretch too, not to mention it is delightfully eye-catching and very tactile.  I love it!

Design Focus

The aim with this crochet mobius scarf was to make it small enough to sit comfortably around the neck, no extra length or bulk, just short and simple.

I also focused on not too wide so it stands up around the neck of it's own accord and being the right width presents the added bonus, it doubles fantastically as a warm headband. Oh yes, it is very, versatile.

crochet patterns, how to crochet, mobius, scarf, cowl, infinity scarf,

Little Extra

For a little extra pizzazz, I added a "quinque floris foliumthat's a five petal (leaf) flower. Oh, this too is a new creation, (more about it in a future blog) and yes it has a brooch backing so it can be moved to somewhere else if you prefer, like coat lapel or pinned to a cardigan. OR wherever, whatever you wish to pin it to!

Matching Mittens

Ok, I am so excited with the new look mobius neckwarmer (headband). That I had to create some fingerless mittens to match, so excited, definitely took my mind off my "fraken" sinusitis, OH DARN, wasn't going to mention that.

Now, these matching mittens are also a new design, last winter I made a pair for myself using the "honeycomb lattice" stitch, a slightly more complex pattern.

Anyway, check out these "little beauties"... you like?

crochet patterns, how to crochet, mittens, fingerless,

I've decided on the "simple no-fuss" cuteness for those more inclined (like myself) who prefer the classic look i.e. mittens without the optional extra of attached flower, however if you happen to be a "flower-power" kind of girl then these are "simply perfect" for you.

crochet patterns, how to crochet, mittens, fingerless,

Pattern Details

My all time favourite yarn of course Rowan Belle Organic DK 50% Organic Wool and 50% Organic Cotton. The colours are gorgeous and they feel great.  I used Hibiscus 009 and Slate 015 and a 4mm hook.

Both the mobius neckwarmer and the mittens are crochet in the round, and the flower brooch is also crochet not only in the round but in one-piece, using colour change, which results in no sew centre piece (you know how much I hate sewing) so I will do anything to get around it!
